My perspective

I’ve worked in player development and education for too long to mention! Having started a journey in coaching children twenty years ago it is only through reflection and examining my own practice that I realise I haven’t actually coached for that long at all. I may have been a technical instructor or an organiser of football but it is only more recently in the last five years I could say I have truly started to understand what “coaching” really means.

Ultimately, coaching is not about the amount of trophies that you win. It is about the difference you make to young people.

It is about the whole child, recognising the importance of developing effective working relationships first and foremost by understanding them as a person. What drives them? Why are they there? Where do they want to get to? It is only by starting to ask some fundamental questions that you can start to build a programme to help them learn as an individual.
